Control inventory across all variations

i want to be able to set one inventory quantity of each item, regardless of style or size chosen. for example, we sell dresses. we can make X dresses and we don't care what style or size is chosen, but we can only sell X dresses. i know so many small shops that would use this app if it could be done.
